Refraining from Cutting Hair and Nails during Dhul-Hijjah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to not cut their nails or hair for the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

It was narrated that 'Amr bin Muslim said: "Ibn Al-Musayyab told me that Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet told him that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever wants to offer a sacrifice, let him not remove anything from his nails or cut his hair for the first ten days Dhul-Jijjah"'.
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي هِلاَلٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ، أَنَّ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ، زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُضَحِّيَ فَلاَ يَقْلِمْ مِنْ أَظْفَارِهِ وَلاَ يَحْلِقْ شَيْئًا مِنْ شَعْرِهِ فِي عَشْرِ الأُوَلِ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of refraining from cutting one's hair and nails during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. It was narrated by 'Amr bin Muslim who heard it from Ibn Al Musayyab who in turn heard it from Umm Salamah, wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). During these ten days, Muslims are encouraged to offer a sacrifice known as Qurbani which is an act of worship that symbolizes obedience to Allah and His commands. By refraining from cutting one's hair and nails during this period, Muslims are reminded that they should be focused on worshipping Allah instead of focusing on worldly matters such as personal grooming. This hadith also teaches us that we should prioritize our spiritual needs over our physical needs in order to gain closeness with Allah SWT.
