Sunan an-Nasai 4341 (Book 42, Hadith 79) #18874
Forbidden Consumption of Donkey Meat

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad forbade the consumption of donkey meat when the people were starving during a military campaign.

It was narrated from Abu Tha''Aabah Al-Khushani that: they went on a military campaign with the Messenger of Allah to Khaibar, and the people were starving. They found some domesticated donkeys there, so the people slaughtered some of them. The Prophet was told about that, and he ordered 'Abdur-rahman bin 'Awf to announce to the people: "The flesh of domesticated donkeys is not permissible for the one who testifies that I am the Messenger of Allah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey religious authority figures and follow instructions from them .

EXPLANATIONS:
During a military campaign to Khaibar with the Prophet Muhammad, some of the people were starving and found domesticated donkeys. They slaughtered some of them for food. When the Prophet was informed about this he ordered 'Abdur-rahman bin 'Awf to announce that it was forbidden for those who believed in him as a messenger to consume donkey meat. This hadith teaches us that even in times of need we must still abide by Islamic laws and not take matters into our own hands without consulting religious authorities first. It also shows us how important it is to follow instructions from religious leaders and not do something just because we think it is right or necessary at that moment in time.
