Hunting with Respect for Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Adiyy bin Hatim to mention the name of Allah when hunting and to only eat the game if it was killed by his arrow, not by water.

It was narrated that 'Adiyy bin Hatim said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about hunting and he said: 'When you shoot your arrow, mention the name of Allah, and if you find that it (the game) has been killed, the eat it, unless you find that it fell into some water, and you do not know whether the water killed it or your arrow"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Mentioning the Name of Allah when shooting an arrow

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about hunting and how one should respect the name of Allah while doing so. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Adiyy bin Hatim that when shooting an arrow, he should mention the name of Allah. If he finds that what he shot has been killed, then he can eat it unless it fell into some water and he does not know whether or not the water killed it or his arrow. This teaches us to be mindful in our actions and to always remember God's presence in all we do. We must also be aware that we are responsible for our own actions and must take responsibility for them accordingly. Additionally, this hadith reminds us to show respect for all living things as well as God's creation in general.
