Hunting with Dogs in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that if a person releases their dog to hunt and mentions the name of Allah, they can eat the game if the dog does not eat any of it. If the dog has eaten from it, then they should not eat it as it was caught for the dog and not for them.

It was narrated from 'Adiyy bin Hatim At-Tai that he asked the Messenger of Allah about hunting. He said: "If you release your dog and mention the name of Allah over him, and he kills (the game), but does not eat any of it, then eat. But if he has eaten from it, then do not eat, for he caught it for himself, and not for you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Release your dogs while mentioning God's name before doing so .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about hunting with dogs in Islam. It is narrated from 'Adiyy bin Hatim At-Tai that he asked the Messenger of Allah about hunting. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if a person releases their dog and mentions the name of Allah over him, then they can eat what is hunted by their dog if it does not eat any part of it itself. However, if their pet has eaten some part of what was hunted, then they should not consume any part as this was caught for their pet and not for them. This hadith teaches us to be mindful when hunting with our pets and to remember to mention God's name before we do so. It also reminds us to be generous towards animals by allowing them to enjoy some portion from what we have hunted ourselves.
