Releasing Dogs and Eating Game

SUMMARY: The Prophet advised Adiyy bin Hatim to not eat the game caught by his dog if he was unsure which of the two dogs had caught it.

It was narrated from Ash-Sha bi that; "Adiyy bin Hatim who was neighbor, Dakhilan and Rabitan at An-Nahrain narrated that he asked the Prophet Saying: 'I released my dog and I find another dog with my dog, and I do not know which of them caught (the game)'. He said: 'Do not eat, for your only said the name of Allah over your dog, and not over any other dog"".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful when hunting with animals; make sure you say Allah's name over your animal before releasing it for hunting; act honestly even in uncertain situations

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about hunting with dogs and eating game. Adiyy bin Hatim asked the Prophet what to do when he released his dog and found another dog with it, and he was uncertain which of them had caught the game. The Prophet advised him not to eat it as he only said Allah's name over his own dog, but not over any other dog. This teaches us that we should be careful when hunting with our animals, as we must be certain that they are allowed to hunt before doing so. We should also make sure that we say Allah's name over our animals before releasing them for hunting, so that whatever they catch will be permissible for us to consume. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us about being honest in all our dealings; even if there is uncertainty in a situation, we should still act honestly and truthfully according to what is known or can be assumed from the situation at hand.
