The Importance of Sacrifice and 'Atirah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed people to offer a sacrifice and an 'Atirah each year.

Mikhnaf bin Sulaim said: "While we were standing with the Messenger of Allah at 'Arafat, he said: 'O people, it is upon each family to offer a sacrifice (Udhiyah) and an 'Atirah each year". (One of the narrators) Muadh said: "Ibn 'Awn used to offer slaughter the 'Atirah, and I saw that with my own eyes during Rajab". (Daif)
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ مُعَاذٍ - قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو رَمْلَةَ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا مِخْنَفُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، قَالَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ وُقُوفٌ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ بِعَرَفَةَ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ أَضْحَاةً وَعَتِيرَةً ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ مُعَاذٌ كَانَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ يَعْتِرُ أَبْصَرَتْهُ عَيْنِي فِي رَجَبٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of offering a sacrifice and an ‘Atirah each year. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was standing with his companions at ‘Arafat when he instructed them to do so. One of the narrators, Muadh, mentioned that Ibn ‘Awn used to offer slaughter the ‘Atirah during Rajab which he saw with his own eyes. Sacrificing animals is a way for Muslims to remember Allah’s mercy in providing sustenance for us as well as being generous towards others by sharing our wealth with those who are less fortunate than us. It also serves as a reminder of how Allah sacrificed His beloved son Isma’il in order to test Ibrahim’s faithfulness towards Him.

The act of sacrificing animals is not only beneficial for us spiritually but it also helps strengthen our relationship with Allah by showing Him that we are willing to give up something precious in order to please Him. Furthermore, it teaches us humility and gratitude towards Allah for all that He has given us in this life. Additionally, it encourages generosity amongst Muslims by reminding them that they should be willing to share their wealth with those who are less fortunate than them. Overall, this hadith emphasizes the importance of sacrificing animals each year as a way of remembering Allah’s mercy upon us and being generous towards others who may not have enough resources or means available for themselves.
