Sahih al-Bukhari 1948 (Book 30, Hadith 55) #1868
Fasting During Journeys

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasted on his journey to Mecca, but he also allowed people to choose whether or not they wanted to fast during journeys.

Narrated Tawus: Ibn 'Abbas said, "Allah's Messenger set out from Medina to Mecca and he fasted till he reached Usfan, where he asked for water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke the fast, and did not fast after that till he reached Mecca, and that happened in Ramadan". Ibn 'Abbas used to say, "Allah's Messenger (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during the journeys so whoever wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not to fast, could do so".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic practices such as fasting with flexibility; Respect individual choices; Be mindful of your health while travelling;

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Tawus and Ibn Abbas tells us that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ set out from Medina to Mecca in the month of Ramadan and fasted until he reached Usfan. He then asked for water, raised his hand so that people could see him, broke his fast and did not continue fasting until he reached Mecca. This shows us that it is permissible for Muslims to break their fast while travelling if they wish. Ibn Abbas used to say that the Prophet ﷺ sometimes chose to fast during journeys while other times he chose not too, thus giving people the freedom of choice when it comes to fasting during travels. This hadith teaches us about being mindful of our health while travelling as well as respecting individual choices when it comes religious practices such as fasting.
