Sahih al-Bukhari 1941 (Book 30, Hadith 48) #1861
Breaking the Fast at Sunset

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed a man to mix Sawiq with water for him and then taught the man when to break his fast.

Narrated Ibn Abi 'Aufa: We were in the company of Allah's Messenger on a journey. He said to a man, "Get down and mix Sawiq (powdered barley) with water for me". The man said, "The sun (has not set yet), O Allah's Messenger ". The Prophet again said to him, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for me". The man again said, "O Allah's Messenger ! The sun!" The Prophet said to him (for the third time) "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for me". The man dismounted and mixed Sawiq with water for him. The Prophet drank it and then beckoned with his hand (towards the East) and said, "When you see the night falling from this side, then a fasting person should break his fast".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's Messenger ﷺ , Break your fast at sunset .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting during Ramadan and breaking the fast at sunset. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was on a journey with Ibn Abi 'Aufa and asked him to get down and mix Sawiq with water for him. When the man hesitated because it was still daytime, he asked again until he finally did it. After drinking it, the Prophet ﷺ gestured towards the east and said that when you see night falling from this side then a fasting person should break their fast. This hadith teaches us that we should be obedient to Allah's Messenger ﷺ even if we don't understand why something is being done or why something needs to be done right away. It also teaches us that we should break our fast at sunset as this is what Allah has commanded us in His book - The Quran - as well as through His messenger Muhammad ﷺ in this hadith. Lastly, it teaches us patience; even though the man hesitated twice before doing what he was told by Allah's Messenger ﷺ , he still followed through in obedience which shows how important patience is in our faith journey.
