The Decree of Allah and His Messenger

SUMMARY: Mu'adh bin Jabal was sent to Yemen as an envoy of the Prophet (SAW). He refused to sit down until a man who had reverted from Islam to Kufr was killed, citing it as the decree of Allah and His Messenger.

It was narrated from Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa Al-Ash'ari, from his father: "That the Prophet SAW sent him to Yemen, then he sent Mu'adh bin Jabal after that. When he arrived he said: 'O people, I am the envoy of the Messenger of Allah SAW to you'. Abu Musa gave him a cushion to sit down, then a man was brought who had been a Jew, then he became a Muslim, then he reverted to Kufr. Mu'adh said: 'I will not sit down until he is killed; this is the decree of Allah and His Messenger,' (saying it) three times. When he was killed, he sat down".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Mu’adh bin Jabal being sent by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as an envoy to Yemen. When he arrived in Yemen he declared himself as the messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Musa gave him a cushion to sit on. However, a man who had been a Jew but then became Muslim before reverting back to Kufr was brought before him. Mu’adh refused to sit down until this man was killed because it was the decree of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ that such people should be put to death for their apostasy. This hadith teaches us that we must obey the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ even if they are difficult for us or go against our own desires or opinions because they are what is best for us in this life and in the hereafter. It also teaches us that apostasy is not tolerated by Islam; those who leave Islam must be punished according to Islamic law so that others may be deterred from doing so themselves.
