Expiation of Vows and Oaths

SUMMARY: The Messenger of Allah taught that the expiation for vows is the same as the expiation for an oath.

It was narrated from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir that the Messenger of Allah said: "The expiation for vows is the expiation for an oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make promises carefully and fulfill them if made; think before speaking; be mindful of your words; keep your word if you give it; take responsibility for your actions/words/promises; do not break promises once given
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when a person makes a vow or an oath, they must fulfill it or else they must make an expiation. An expiation is something done to make up for not fulfilling a vow or an oath. It could be giving charity, fasting, freeing a slave, etc. This hadith reminds us to be careful with our words and to think before we speak so that we don't have to make any expiations later on.
