Sahih al-Bukhari 1917 (Book 30, Hadith 27) #1840
Interpreting Quran Verses

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the verse in the Quran about eating and drinking until the white thread appears was interpreted by some people before it was clarified.

Narrated Sahl bin Saud: When the following verses were revealed: 'Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread' and of dawn was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how some people interpreted a verse from the Quran before it was clarified. The verse in question is “Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread”. Before this verse was clarified with further revelation of “of dawn”, some people who intended to fast tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between them. After Allah revealed “of dawn” it became clear that meant night and day. This hadith teaches us that we should not interpret verses of the Quran without proper knowledge or understanding as we may end up misunderstanding them or misinterpreting them which can lead us astray from our faith.
