Respect your ancestors and do not use their names in vain or as an excuse for any wrongdoing or misdeeds; Be mindful of your words; Speak truthfully at all times; Strive to be accountable before God for your words and actions.

This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's prohibition of swearing by one's forefathers. It was narrated by Yahya bin Abi Ishaq who said that a man from Banu Ghifar told him in the gathering of Salim bin 'Abdullah that Salim heard Abdullah -that is, Ibn Umar- say that the Messenger of Allah said "Allah forbids you to swear by your forefathers." This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our words and not to take oaths lightly. We should remember that we are accountable for our words and actions before God and should strive to speak truthfully at all times.
