The Impermanence of Gifts

SUMMARY: Gifts should not be given with the intention of them being permanent.

Isma'il narrated from Muhammad, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allah said: "There is no lifelong gift. Whoever is given something as a lifelong gift, it belongs to him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the impermanence of gifts. It teaches us that when we give a gift to someone it should not be with the intention that it will remain theirs forever. The Prophet Muhammad is teaching us that gifts are meant to be temporary and should not be given as a lifelong possession. We can learn from this hadith that giving and receiving gifts is an important part of our culture but we must remember to do so in moderation and without expecting anything in return. We must also remember to appreciate what we have been given and use it wisely before returning it or passing it on to someone else.
