The Permissibility of Gifts

SUMMARY: It is permissible to give and receive gifts, but it is not acceptable to take back a gift.

Hajjaj narrated from Abu Az-Zubair, from Tawus, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Umra (life-long gift) is permissible for the one to whom it is given, and Ruqba is permissible to the one to whom it is given, and the one who takes back his gift is like the one who goes back to his vomit'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Give & Receive Gifts Generously & Gratefully

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the permissibility of giving and receiving gifts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that it is permissible for someone to give or receive a gift, but if they take back the gift then it is like taking back their vomit. This means that taking back a gift after giving it away shows bad character and manners. It also teaches us that we should be generous with our gifts and not expect anything in return. We should also be thankful for any gifts we receive from others without expecting them to take them back later on.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching us how important it is to show good character when giving or receiving something from someone else. He was reminding us that generosity should be shown when gifting something as well as being thankful for what we have been given by others without expecting anything in return. We should also remember not to take back any gifts once they have been given away as this shows bad manners and character which goes against Islamic teachings.
