The Significance of Months

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) showed the fingers of both his hands thrice and left out one thumb on the third time to illustrate the importance of months.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said, "The month is like this and this," (at the same time he showed the fingers of both his hands thrice) and left out one thumb on the third time.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ سُحَيْمٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ "‏ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا ‏"‏‏.‏ وَخَنَسَ الإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ illustrated the importance of months by showing the fingers of both his hands thrice and leaving out one thumb on the third time. This hadith teaches us that each month is important and should be respected. It also shows us that we should not take any month for granted or underestimate its value. We should use our time wisely in every month to do good deeds and strive for success in this life and hereafter. Furthermore, it reminds us that we must be mindful about how we spend our days because they are limited in number.
