Sunan an-Nasai 3639 (Book 30, Hadith 29) #18253
Generosity and Kindness of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed kindness and generosity to a Jew who was owed some dates by the father of Jabir bin 'Abdullah.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "My father owed some dates to a Jew. He was killed on the Day of Uhud and he left behind two gardens. The dates owed to the Jew would take up everything in the two gardens. The Prophet said: 'Can you take half this year and half next year?' But the Jew refused. The Prophet said: 'When the time to pick the dates comes, call me'. So I called him and he came, accompanied by Abu Bakr. The dates were picked and weighed from the lowest part of the palm trees, and the Messenger of Allah was praying for blessing, until we paid off everything that we owed him from the smaller of the two gardens, as calculated by 'Ammar. Then I brought them some fresh dates and water and they ate and drank, then he said: 'This is part of the blessing concerning which you will be questioned'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with others regardless of their faith backgrounds; Respect people from other faiths; Show compassion towards those in need; Pay off debts promptly; Offer blessings whenever possible; Pray for blessings upon others

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah tells us about the generosity and kindness of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His father had owed some dates to a Jew, but he passed away on the Day of Uhud. To pay off his debt, they would have to use up all that was in two gardens. The Prophet suggested that they take half this year and half next year, but when the Jew refused, he said that they should call him when it was time to pick them. When it came time for picking them, he came with Abu Bakr and prayed for blessing until everything was paid off from one garden as calculated by Ammar. He then offered them fresh dates and water as part of his blessing. This hadith teaches us about how generous and kind our beloved prophet was towards others even if they were not Muslim or from another faith background. It also shows us how important it is to be generous with others no matter their background or religion because Allah will reward those who are generous in this life as well as in the hereafter.
