Leaving Wealth for Children

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas to leave one-third of his wealth for his children, even though they were already wealthy.

It was narrated that Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said: "The Messenger of Allah visited me when I was sick, and said: 'Have you made a will?' I said: 'Yes'. He said: 'How much?' I said: 'For all my wealth to be given in the cause of Allah'. He said: 'What have you left for your children?' I said: 'They are rich (independent of means)'. He said: 'Bequeath one-tenth'. And we kept discussing it until he said: 'Bequeath one-third, and one-third is much or large'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of leaving a will and giving inheritance to one's children. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visited Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas when he was sick and asked him if he had made a will. When Sa'd said that he had left all his wealth in the cause of Allah, the Prophet asked what he had left for his children. Even though they were already rich, the Prophet advised him to bequeath at least one-third of his wealth to them as an inheritance. They discussed it further until the Prophet said that one-third was much or large enough for them. This teaches us that it is important to provide for our children even if they are already wealthy, as it is part of our responsibility as parents and guardians. It also shows us how generous and kind the Prophet was in advising people on matters related to their families and possessions.
