Setting Slaves Free and Kindness

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when a slave is set free, the Wala' belongs to the one who sets them free. He also showed kindness and generosity by giving Barirah a choice and her husband was a free man.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that she wanted to buy Barirah, but her masters stipulated that her Wala' should go to them. She mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: "Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free". Some meat was brought and it was said: "This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah". He said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us". And the Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and her husband was a free man.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of setting slaves free, as well as kindness and generosity. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to buy Barirah but her masters stipulated that her Wala' should go to them. He then said "Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free". When some meat was brought he said it was charity for Barirah and a gift for them. He then gave Barirah the choice, with her husband being a free man. This hadith shows us how important it is to be kind towards those in need, especially those who are enslaved or oppressed in any way. It also teaches us about charity; giving away something without expecting anything in return out of kindness or generosity towards others can bring great rewards from Allah SWT both in this world and hereafter InshaAllah!
