Sunan an-Nasai 3447 (Book 27, Hadith 59) #18059
Charity and Freedom for Barirah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's wife, Aishah, narrating three Sunan that were established because of Barirah. One of these Sunan was that she was set free and given the choice concerning her husband. The Prophet also taught that charity should be given to those in need and accepted when it is offered to him.

It was narrated that 'Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, said: Three Sunan were established because of Barirah. One of those Sunan was that she was set free and was given the choice concerning her husband; the Messenger of Allah said: 'Al Wala' is to the one who set the slave free;' and the Messenger of Allah entered when some meat was being cooked in a pot, but bread and some condiments were brought to him. He said: 'Do I not see a pot in which some meat is being cooked?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, that is meat that was given in charity to Barirah and you do not eat (food given in) charity'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'It is charity for her and a gift for us'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity to those in need; Respect other's choices; Give freedom to others; Accept food given in charity when offered .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about three important values; charity, freedom and choice. It tells us how we should treat those who are less fortunate than us by giving them charity as a form of kindness. We should also give people freedom so they can make their own decisions without being forced into something they don’t want to do. Lastly, we must respect people’s choices even if we don’t agree with them because everyone has their own opinion on things which should be respected. These values were established by the Prophet Muhammad through his wife Aishah when she narrated this hadith about Barirah who was set free and given a choice concerning her husband as well as receiving charity from others which was accepted by the Prophet himself.
