Giving Gifts on Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad advised Ali to give something to Fatimah when they got married, and suggested that he give her his Hutami armor.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "When Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, married Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, the Messenger of Allah said to him: 'Give her something'. He said: 'I do not have anything'. He said: 'Where is your Hutami armor?'"
أَخْبَرَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ لَمَّا تَزَوَّجَ عَلِيٌّ رضى الله عنه فَاطِمَةَ رضى الله عنها قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ أَعْطِهَا شَيْئًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَأَيْنَ دِرْعُكَ الْحُطَمِيَّةُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of giving gifts on marriage. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that when Ali and Fatimah were married, the Prophet Muhammad advised Ali to give her something as a gift. When Ali said he did not have anything, the Prophet suggested that he give her his Hutami armor. This shows us how important it is for couples to exchange gifts on their wedding day as a sign of love and appreciation for one another. It also teaches us about generosity and kindness towards our spouses, even if we do not have much material wealth or possessions.
