Sunan an-Nasai 3341 (Book 26, Hadith 146) #17953
Dowry of Islam

SUMMARY: Umm Sulaim proposed that Abu Talhah convert to Islam as her dowry, and he accepted.

It was narrated that Anas said: "Abu Talhah proposed marriage to Umm Sulaim and she said: 'By Allah, a man like you is not to be rejected, O Abu Talhah, but you are a disbeliever and I am a Muslim, and it is not permissible for me to marry you. If you become Muslim, that will be my dowry, and I will not ask you for anything else'. So he became Muslim and that was her dowry". (one of the narrators) Thabit said: "I have never heard of a woman whose dowry was more precious than Umm Sulaim (whose dowry was) Islam. And he consummated the marriage with her, and she bore him a child".

QUICK LESSONS:
Convert to Islam if you want to get married
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells the story of Umm Sulaim and Abu Talhah. Umm Sulaim was a Muslim woman who wanted to marry Abu Talhah, a non-Muslim man. She proposed that if he converted to Islam, it would be her dowry. He accepted and they got married, with his conversion being the only dowry she asked for. This hadith teaches us about the importance of faith in marriage and how it is more valuable than any material possessions or wealth one could offer as a dowry. It also shows us how powerful faith can be in influencing people's decisions and actions; even though Abu Talhah was not originally Muslim, his love for Umm Sulaim was so strong that he chose to convert in order to marry her.
