Sahih al-Bukhari 1868 (Book 29, Hadith 2) #1791
Building of the Mosque in Medina

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the building of a mosque and the Bani Najjar offered their land for free in exchange for a reward from Allah.

Narrated Anas: The Prophet came to Medina and ordered a mosque to be built and said, "O Bani Najjar! Suggest to me the price (of your land)". They said, "We do not want its price except from Allah" (ie they wished for a reward from Allah for giving up their land freely). So, the Prophet ordered the graves of the pagans to be dug out and the land to be leveled, and the date-palm trees to be cut down. The cut date palms were fixed in the direction of the Qibla of the mosque.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your possessions; Give away what you have without expecting anything in return; Follow directions when building something so that it faces towards Mecca during prayer times; Ask only rewards from God .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's order to build a mosque in Medina. The people of Bani Najjar offered their land for free as an act of charity and devotion to Allah. In return, they asked only for a reward from Allah. To make way for the mosque, date palms were cut down and used to point towards the qibla direction. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our possessions and give away what we have without expecting anything in return except from Allah's mercy and blessings. It also shows us how important it is to follow directions when building something so that it faces towards Mecca during prayer times.
