The Equivalence of 'Umra and Hajj

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Um Sinan Al-Ansari to perform 'Umra in the month of Ramadan as it is equivalent to Hajj.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: When the Prophet returned after performing his Hajj, he asked Um Sinan Al-Ansari, "What did forbid you to perform Hajj?" She replied, "Father of so-and-so (ie her husband) had two camels and he performed Hajj on one of them, and the second is used for the irrigation of our land". The Prophet said (to her), "Perform 'Umra in the month of Ramadan, (as it is equivalent to Hajj or Hajj with me (in reward).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive your best in fulfilling religious obligations despite financial or other constraints.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates the story of when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ returned from his pilgrimage, he asked a woman named Um Sinan Al-Ansari why she did not go on pilgrimage. She explained that her husband only had two camels and one was used for pilgrimage while the other was used for irrigation. In response, the Prophet ﷺ told her that performing an ‘Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to performing a pilgrimage with him. This hadith teaches us that even if we are unable to perform certain religious obligations due to financial or other constraints, Allah will reward us for our efforts in other ways. It also shows us how merciful and understanding Allah is towards His servants who strive their best but are unable to fulfill all their obligations due to circumstances beyond their control.
