Sahih al-Bukhari 1854 (Book 28, Hadith 34) #1777
Performing Hajj on Behalf of an Elderly Person

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed a woman to perform Hajj on behalf of her elderly father.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas: Al-Fadl was riding behind the Prophet and a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came up. Al-Fadl started looking at her and she looked at him. The Prophet turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. She said, "My father has come under Allah's obligation of performing Hajj but he is a very old man and cannot sit properly on his Mount. Shall I perform Hajj on his behalf? The Prophet replied in the affirmative. That happened during Hajjat-al-Wada' of the Prophet .

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive your best to fulfill your religious obligations even if you have difficulty doing so.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's permission for a woman from the tribe of Khath'am to perform Hajj on behalf of her elderly father. The Prophet Muhammad was riding with Al-Fadl when they encountered the woman who asked if she could perform Hajj on behalf of her father who was too old and weak to do it himself. The Prophet Muhammad gave his permission and this happened during his final pilgrimage known as "Hajjat-al-Wada'". This hadith teaches us that we should be considerate and compassionate towards those who are unable to fulfill their obligations due to age or any other reason. It also shows us that performing religious duties such as Hajj is an obligation for all Muslims regardless of their age or physical condition. We should strive our best to fulfill our religious obligations even if we have difficulty doing so.
