Sunan an-Nasai 3101 (Book 25, Hadith 17) #17713
Exceptions for Disabled Believers

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that believers who are able-bodied should not stay at home, but those who are disabled by injury, blindness or lameness have an exception.

It was narrated from Al-Bara' that the Prophet said: "bring me a shoulder blade of a camel, or a tablet, and write: Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)". 1 'Amr bin Umm Maktum was behind him and he said: "Is there a concession for me?" Then the following was revealed: "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame)". 2 1 An-Nisa' 4:95. 2 An-Nisa' 4:95.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge & ask questions; Strive for good deeds; Show compassion towards those with disabilities
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that believers who are able to do so should not stay at home and must strive to do good deeds. However, those who are disabled by injury, blindness or lameness have an exception and they can remain at home without being held accountable for it. This hadith also shows us the importance of asking questions in order to gain knowledge and understanding of religious matters. 'Amr bin Umm Maktum asked a question which resulted in the revelation of a verse from the Quran which granted him an exemption from this obligation due to his disability. This teaches us that we should always seek knowledge and ask questions when we don't understand something as it may lead to new revelations from Allah SWT.
