Sahih al-Bukhari 1833 (Book 28, Hadith 13) #1756
The Sanctity of Mecca

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that Mecca is a sanctuary and it is not allowed to uproot its shrubs, cut its trees, chase or disturb its game, or pick up its luqata except by someone who announces it publicly.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: "The Prophet said, 'Allah has made Mecca, a sanctuary, so it was a sanctuary before me and will continue to be a sanctuary after me. It was made legal for me (ie I was allowed to fight in it) for a few hours of a day. It is not allowed to uproot its shrubs or to cut its trees, or to chase (or disturb) its game, or to pick up its luqata (fallen things) except by a person who would announce that (what he has found) publicly'. Al-'Abbas said, 'O Allah's Messenger ! Except Al-Idhkhir (a kind of grass) (for it is used) by our goldsmiths and for our graves'. The Prophet then said, 'Except Al-Idhkhir'. " 'Ikrima said, 'Do you know what "chasing or disturbing" the game means? It means driving it out of the shade to occupy its place".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect nature & take care of our environment
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the sanctity of Mecca and how we should treat it with respect. It was made a sanctuary before the Prophet Muhammad's time and will continue to be one after his time. We are not allowed to uproot any shrubs, cut any trees, chase or disturb any game in the area, nor pick up anything from the ground without announcing it publicly first. Al-'Abbas asked for an exception for al-Idhkhir which is used by goldsmiths and for graves but this was granted by the Prophet Muhammad. This hadith teaches us that we should respect nature and take care of our environment as well as respecting other people's property even if they are not around to see us do so.
