Sahih al-Bukhari 1830 (Book 28, Hadith 10) #1753
Escaping Evil

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were in a cave at Mina when Surat-wal-Mursalat was revealed. A snake suddenly sprang at them, but the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered them to kill it. The snake escaped quickly, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said that they had both escaped each other's evil.

Narrated 'Abdullah: While we were in the company of the Prophet in a cave at Mina, when Surat-wal-Mursalat were revealed and he recited it and I heard it (directly) from his mouth as soon as he recited its revelation. Suddenly a snake sprang at us and the Prophet said (ordered us): "Kill it". We ran to kill it but it escaped quickly. The Prophet said, "It has escaped your evil and you too have escaped its evil".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect all living creatures regardless of their size or perceived danger level , Strive for peace & harmony between all living creatures , Avoid acts of violence & aggression whenever possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a time when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions were in a cave at Maqam in Mina. During this time, Surat-wal-Mursalat was revealed to him and he recited it for his companions to hear. Suddenly, a snake sprang out of nowhere towards them but the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to kill it. However, it managed to escape quickly before they could do so. The Prophet ﷺ then said that they had both escaped each other's evil - meaning that by not killing the snake, they had avoided its potential harm while also avoiding committing an act of violence against another living creature which would have been wrong according to Islamic teachings. This teaches us that we should always strive for peace and avoid violence whenever possible as well as respect all living creatures regardless of their size or perceived danger level since Allah has created all things with purpose and wisdom behind it even if we may not understand what those are right away or ever fully comprehend His infinite knowledge.
