Sunan an-Nasai 2902 (Book 24, Hadith 285) #17514
Refraining from Change in Times of Transition

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to knock down the House and give it two doors, but he refrained from doing so because his people had recently left Jahiliyyah.

It was narrated from Al-Aswad that the Mother of the Believers said: "The Messenger of Allah said: "Were it not for the fact that my people' - according to the narration of Muhammad he said: 'Your people' - 'have recently left Jahiliyyah, I would have knocked down the House and given it two doors'." When Ibn Az-Zubair was in power, he gave it two doors.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be patient during times of transition; Respect others’ beliefs and customs; Consider appropriate timing for change; Follow Islamic law and guidance .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith speaks about the importance of refraining from change during times of transition. It was narrated by Al-Aswad that the Mother of the Believers said that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to knock down a house and give it two doors. However, he refrained from doing so because his people had recently left Jahiliyyah which is a period in history when there was no Islamic law or guidance. This shows us how important it is to be patient during times of transition as sudden changes can be difficult for people who are used to living a certain way. Ibn Az-Zubair later gave the house two doors when he was in power which shows us that sometimes change can be beneficial if done at an appropriate time.
