The Dangers of Begging

SUMMARY: Begging is not encouraged and should only be done when there is no other alternative.

It was narrated that Samurah bin Jundab said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Begging will be but lacerations on a man's face (on the Day of Resurrection). Unless he asks a man in authority or when he has no alternative"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for help from those with authority over you if you have no other choice.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns against the dangers of begging. It was narrated by Samurah bin Jundab that the Messenger of Allah said, “Begging will be but lacerations on a man's face on the Day of Resurrection”. This means that begging will bring shame and humiliation to a person in the afterlife. The Prophet then went on to say, “Unless he asks a man in authority or when he has no alternative”. This means that it is acceptable to beg if one has no other choice or if they are asking someone who holds power or authority over them such as their ruler or leader. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that we should avoid begging unless it is absolutely necessary and even then we should only ask those who have power over us for help.
