Sahih al-Bukhari 1785 (Book 26, Hadith 12) #1710
Performing Umrah Before Hajj

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and 'Ali had come from Yemen with the Hadi. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his companions to finish their Ihram except those who had the Hadi with them. 'Aisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies of Hajj except Tawaf, so she performed 'Umra after Hajj in Dhi-l-Hijja. Suraqa bin Malik asked if this was permissible only for the Prophet (ﷺ), to which he replied that it is permissible for all Muslims to perform 'Umra before Hajj.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: The Prophet and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet and Talha had the Hadi with them'.Ali had come from Yemen and he had the Hadi with him. He ('Ali) said, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of Allah's Messenger has assumed it". The Prophet ordered his companions to intend the Ihram with which they had come for 'Umra, to perform the Tawaf of the Ka'ba (and between Safa and Marwa), to get their hair cut short and then to finish their Ihram with the exception of those who had the Hadi with them. They asked, "Shall we go to Mina and the private organs of some of us are dribbling (if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives)?" The Prophet heard that and said, "Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi. If I did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram"'.Aisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies (of Hajj) except the Tawaf . So when she became clean from her menses, and she had performed the Tawaf of the Ka'ba, she said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You (people) are returning with both Hajj and 'Umra and I am returning only with Hajj!" So, he ordered 'Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr to go with her to at-Tan'im. Thus she performed 'Umra after the Hajj in the month of Dhi-l-Hijja. Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'sham met the Prophet at Al-'Aqaba (Jamrat-ul 'Aqaba) while the latter was stoning it and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Is this permissible only for you?" The Prophet replied, "No, it is for ever (ie it is permissible for all Muslims to perform 'Umra before Hajj".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings regarding religious obligations such as umra & hajj, take care of one's physical & mental health by avoiding overexertion beyond one's capabilities etc .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses how Muslims should go about performing their pilgrimage of hajj or umrah, two important religious rituals in Islam. It is narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions assumed ihram for hajj, Ali came from Yemen with a hady - an animal sacrificed as part of hajj or umrah rituals - and said he intended to perform ihram like everyone else. The Prophet then ordered everyone else to finish their ihrams except those who had a hady with them, as they could not do so without sacrificing it first. Aisha got her menses during this time but still managed to complete all other ceremonies of hajj apart from tawaf - circling around Kaaba seven times - which she did later on after becoming clean again from her menses when she returned back home after completing her hajj pilgrimage. Lastly, Suraqa asked if this was only permissible for the prophet ﷺ himself or others too could do it; upon which he replied that it is permissible for all Muslims to perform umra before hajj if they wish so.

This hadith teaches us about how we should go about performing our religious obligations such as umra and hajj according to Islamic teachings while also emphasizing on taking care of our health during such times by not overburdening ourselves unnecessarily; something we can learn even today in our daily lives while trying hard not to overexert ourselves beyond what we are capable of doing at any given time due its potential harms on our physical health as well as mental wellbeing in general .
