Fasting and Eating Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was fasting and asked his wife if she had anything for him to eat, but she said no. Later, she was given a gift of food which he then ate.

It was narrated from 'Aishah, the mother of the Believers, that the Prophet used to come to her when he was fasting and say: "Do you have anything this morning that you can give me to eat?" we would say no, and he would say: "I am fasting". Then after that he came and she said: "I have been given a gift". He said: "What is it?" she said: "Hais". He said: "I started the day fasting," but then he ate.

QUICK LESSONS:
Accepting gifts from others , Breaking one's fast with gifts or charity , Being generous and kind-hearted towards others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of fasting. He would ask his wife if there was anything for him to eat in the morning when he was fasting, and when she said no he would say that he was fasting. Later on in the day, his wife told him that she had been given a gift of food which he then ate despite having started off with a fast. This teaches us that it is permissible to break one's fast with gifts or charity as long as it is not done out of greed or gluttony. It also shows us how generous and kind-hearted our beloved Prophet Muhammad was towards others even while observing religious obligations such as fasting.
