Breaking Fast While Traveling

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowing a traveler to break their fast while on a journey.

It was narrated that Ghalian said: "I went out with Abu Qilabah on a journey and he brought some food. I said: 'I am fasting'. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah went out on a journey and brought some food, and said to a man: Come and eat. He said: I am fasting. He said: Allah has waived for the traveler half of the prayer and fasting when traveling, so come and eat. So I came close and ate"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek guidance from Allah when fulfilling religious obligations away from home or in unfamiliar places .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings regarding fasting and traveling. It was narrated that Ghalian went on a journey with Abu Qilabah and he brought some food. When Ghalian said he was fasting, Abu Qilabah reminded him of the Prophet's teachings that Allah has waived for travelers half of their prayer and fasting when they are traveling. Therefore, Ghalian came close and ate from the food provided by Abu Qilabah. This hadith teaches us that Allah has given travelers permission to break their fast while they are on a journey as it can be difficult to keep up with religious obligations while traveling due to fatigue or lack of resources. It also teaches us that we should be mindful of our religious obligations even when we are away from home or in unfamiliar places as Allah will always provide us with ways to fulfill them if we seek His guidance.
