Allah's Waiver of Fasting and Prayer for Travelers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that Allah has waived fasting and prayer for travelers.

It was narrated that Abu Umayyah Ad-Damri said: "I came to the Messenger of Allah from a journey and greeted him with Salam. When I was going to leave he said: 'Stay and have meal for breakfast, O Abu Umayyah'. I said: 'I am fasting, O Prophet of Allah'. He said: 'Come and I will tell about the traveler. Allah, most high, has waived fasting and of the prayer for him"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It was narrated by Abu Umayyah Ad-Damri who said he came to the Messenger of Allah from a journey and greeted him with salaam. When he was about to leave, the Prophet asked him to stay and have breakfast even though he was fasting. The Prophet then said that Allah has waived fasting and prayer for travelers. This hadith teaches us that when we are traveling, we do not need to fast or pray as much as we would if we were at home. We should still be mindful of our faith while on our journey but it is okay if we don’t follow all the same rules as when at home. This hadith also teaches us that hospitality is important in Islam; even though Abu Umayyah was fasting, the Prophet still invited him to stay for breakfast out of kindness and respect.
