Distinguishing Day and Night

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the meaning of a verse from the Quran which states that day and night are distinguished by a white thread and a black thread.

It was narrated from 'Adiyy bin Hatim that: he asked the Messenger of Allah about the verse "Until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)". He said: "It is the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the day"'.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى ‏{‏ حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ ‏}‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ هُوَ سَوَادُ اللَّيْلِ وَبَيَاضُ النَّهَارِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about distinguishing between day and night. It was narrated by Adiyy bin Hatim who asked the Prophet Muhammad about a verse in the Quran which states that day and night are distinguished by a white thread and a black thread. The Prophet Muhammad explained that this refers to the whiteness of day time and the darkness of night time. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions during both day time as well as night time since they are both distinct from each other. We should strive to do good deeds during both times so we can reap rewards from Allah in this life as well as in the hereafter.
