Sunan an-Nasai 2138 (Book 22, Hadith 49) #16749
Determining the End of Ramadan

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the completion of the month of Ramadan and how to determine when it ends.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: The month may be twenty-nine days or it may be thirty. When you see it, then stop fasting, and it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then complete the count"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions from Allah and His Messenger accurately; take extra steps or precautions for accuracy; strive for accuracy in your actions; rely on Allah's guidance.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about determining when the month of Ramadan ends. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that a month can either be 29 or 30 days long, and if you are unable to see the moon due to clouds, then you should complete counting 30 days. This teaches us that we should not rely on our own judgement but rather follow what has been prescribed by Allah and His Messenger in order to determine when a certain event occurs. It also teaches us that we should always strive for accuracy in our actions, even if it means taking extra steps or precautions.
