Discouraging Boasting and Reminding of Forgetfulness

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) discouraged people from boasting about their deeds and reminded them that they are prone to forgetfulness and sleep.

It was narrated from abu Bakrah that the Prophet said; 'None of you should say: 'I fasted Ramadan' or 'I prayed Qiyam throughout the whole month"'. I do not know whether he dislike self-praise or he said: "Inevitably there will be heedlessness and sleep". (Da 'if)

QUICK LESSONS:
Stay humble in all situations

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is a reminder from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to not boast about our deeds, such as fasting during Ramadan or praying qiyam throughout the month. He did not want us to be proud of ourselves for doing good deeds, because we are all prone to forgetfulness and sleep. We should remember that Allah is the one who gives us strength to do good things, so it is Him we should thank for our accomplishments. We should also remember that Allah knows what’s in our hearts, so even if we don’t say it out loud, He knows when we are boasting or being proud of ourselves. Therefore, it is important for us to stay humble in all situations and give thanks only to Allah for any success or accomplishment we may have achieved.
