Sunan an-Nasai 2069 (Book 21, Hadith 252) #16680
Mercy & Forgiveness in Punishment

SUMMARY: The hadith is about two people who were being punished for their wrongdoings, one of which was not taking care to avoid getting urine on his body or clothes and the other was spreading gossip. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) planted a fresh palm stalk on each grave as a sign of mercy and forgiveness.

It was narrated that Ibn ' Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah passed by two graves and said: "They are being punished but they are not being punished for anything that was difficult to avoid. One of them used not to take care to avoid getting urine on his body or clothes, and the other used to walk about spreading gossip'. Then he took a fresh palm stalk and broke it in half, and planted one half on each grave. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did not do that?' He said: 'May it be reduced for them so long as this does not dry out"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards others no matter what they have done wrong .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of mercy and forgiveness even when punishing someone for their wrongdoings. It tells us that even if someone has done something wrong, we should still show them mercy and forgive them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by two graves and noticed that they were being punished for their sins, one of which was not taking care to avoid getting urine on his body or clothes, while the other used to walk around spreading gossip. He then took a fresh palm stalk and broke it in half before planting one half on each grave as an act of mercy towards them. When asked why he did this, he replied that it would reduce their punishment until the palm stalks dried out completely. This teaches us that we should always be merciful towards others no matter what they have done wrong; instead of punishing them harshly, we should try our best to forgive them so they can learn from their mistakes without feeling too much pain or suffering from it.
