Forbidding of Asking Forgiveness for Idolaters

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked his uncle Abu Talib to accept Islam before he died, but Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah tried to dissuade him from doing so. Allah then revealed two verses in the Quran which forbade the Prophet from asking forgiveness for idolaters.

It was narrated from Sa'eed bin Al-Musayyab that his father said: "When Abu Talib was dying, the Prophet came to him and found Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah with him. He said: 'O uncle, say La ilaha illallah(there is none worthy of worship except Allah), a word with which I will defend you before Allah'. Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said: 'O Abu Talib, are you turning away from the religion of 'Abdul-Muttalib'. Then the Prophet said: 'I will keep on asking for Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so'. Then the following was revealed: It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah's forgiveness for the idolaters. And the following was revealed: Verily, you (O Muhammad) guide not whom you like".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect others' beliefs and choices ; Seek guidance only through Allah ; Make decisions about faith matters with help only from Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation that occurred when the Prophet Muhammad's uncle, Abu Talib, was on his deathbed. The Prophet asked him to accept Islam by saying "La ilaha illallah" but Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah tried to convince him not to do so by reminding him of his ancestor's religion. In response, Allah revealed two verses in the Quran which forbid the Prophet from asking forgiveness for idolaters. This hadith teaches us that we should never try to stop someone from accepting Islam or any other religion because it is their own choice and decision. We should also remember that no matter how close someone may be related to us, we cannot force them into believing something they don't want or believe in themselves.
