Respectful Funeral Etiquette

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions went to a funeral, and when they reached the grave, the Lahd had not yet been prepared.

It was narrated that Al-Bark' said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah for a funeral, and when we reached the grave the Lahd had not yet been prepared. He sat, and we sat around him, as if there were birds on our heads".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect at funerals by being quiet and still while paying respects to those who have passed away.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about showing respect at funerals. It was narrated by Al-Bark' that he and the Prophet Muhammad went to a funeral together. When they arrived at the grave, it had not yet been prepared for burial. The Prophet sat down with his companions around him as if there were birds on their heads - meaning that they were sitting very still and quietly out of respect for the deceased person. This teaches us that we should always show respect when attending funerals by being quiet and still while paying our respects to those who have passed away.
