Sunan an-Nasai 1978 (Book 21, Hadith 161) #16589
Funeral Prayer Etiquette

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the funeral prayer of Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali, wife of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, and her son Zaid. It explains how Ibn 'Umar placed the men closer to the Imam and women closer to the Qiblah in one row.

Ibn Juraij said: "I heard Naji, claim that Ibn 'Umar offered the funeral prayer for nine together. He put the men closer to the Imam and the women closer to the Qiblah, and he placed them (the women) in one row. And the body of Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali the wife of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, and a son of hers called Zaid were placed together. The Imam that day was Saeed bin Al-As and among the people were Ibn 'Umar, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed and Abu Qatadah. The boy was placed closer to the Imam. A man said something objecting to that, so I looked at Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed and Abu Qatadah and said: 'What is this?' They said: 'It is the Sunnah".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about how to perform a funeral prayer for multiple people at once. It was narrated by Ibn Juraij who heard it from Naji who heard it from Ibn 'Umar, one of Prophet Muhammad's companions. According to this hadith, when performing a funeral prayer for multiple people at once, men should be placed closer to the Imam while women should be placed closer to the Qiblah in one row. This practice was objected by someone but other companions such as Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed and Abu Qatadah said that it is part of Prophet Muhammad's teachings or Sunnah which must be followed. Therefore this hadith teaches us that we must follow Prophet Muhammad's teachings even if we don't understand them or find them strange because they are based on wisdom which only Allah knows best.
