Washing and Shrouding of the Prophet's Daughter

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed his companions to wash his daughter with water and lotus leaves, adding camphor in the last wash, and then shroud her in his waist-wrap.

It was narrated that Umm 'Atiyyah said: "The Messenger of Allah entered upon us when we were washing his daughter and said: 'Wash her three times or five, or more if you think (that is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me'. When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it"'.
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

This hadith is about the instructions given by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding washing and shrouding of his daughter. He instructed Umm 'Atiyyah to wash her three times or five, or more if necessary with water and lotus leaves, adding camphor in the last wash. After that he threw his waist-wrap to them so they could use it for shrouding her body after death. This hadith teaches us about cleanliness as well as respect for those who have passed away; it also shows us how much importance was given to cleanliness during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . It also teaches us that we should take care of our loved ones even after their death by giving them a proper burial according to Islamic teachings.
