Sunan an-Nasai 1787 (Book 20, Hadith 190) #16398
The Charity of Sleep

SUMMARY: Sleep is a charity given to us by Allah and if we intend to pray qiyam but fall asleep, our intention will still be recorded.

It was narrated from Abu Ad-Darda' who attributed it to the Prophet : "Whoever goes to his bed intending to get up and pray qiyam at night, then sleep overwhelms him until morning, will have recorded that which he intended and his sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime".

QUICK LESSONS:
Have gratitude towards Allah's blessings ; Have good intentions ; Get enough rest/sleep .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that even if we intend on doing something good like praying qiyam but end up falling asleep instead due to exhaustion or any other reason, Allah still records our intention as an act of worship. Furthermore, He also gives us the gift of sleep as a form of charity from Him. This means that when we are tired after a long day and need rest in order for our bodies and minds to function properly again; this is also an act of worship because it was given by Allah Himself! We should therefore be grateful for this blessing from Him even though it may not seem like much at first glance. Additionally, this hadith encourages us not only in terms of prayer but also in terms of any good deed we plan on doing; no matter what happens or how much time passes before we can actually do it - our intentions are always taken into account by Allah Almighty!
