The Obligation of Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: Witr is an obligatory prayer and can be performed with one, three, five or seven rak'ahs.

Duwaid bin Nafi' said: " Ibn Shihab informed me, saying: 'Ata bin Yazid narrated to me from Abu Ayyub: That the Prophet said: 'Witr is a duty, and whoever wants to pray witr with seven (rak'ahs), let him do so; whoever wants to pray witr with five, let him do so, whoever wants to pray witr with three, let him do so; and whoever wants to pray witr with one, let him do so'."
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ضُبَارَةُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّلِيلِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي دُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِخَمْسٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلاَثٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the obligation of witr prayer which is a voluntary prayer that Muslims perform at night after Isha prayers. It can be performed with one, three, five or seven rak'ahs depending on the preference of the person praying. This hadith also emphasizes that it is important to pray witr as it has been commanded by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. It teaches us to follow his teachings and practice them in our daily lives in order to gain rewards from Allah SWT.
