Praying Night Prayer in Pairs

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a man to pray two rakats of night prayer in pairs and if he fears that dawn will come, he should pray witr with one.

Ibn Umar told them that : A man asked the Messenger of Allah about prayers at night, and he said: "Two by two, then if one of you fears that dawn will come, let him pray witr with one".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يُونُسَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْحُرِّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، أَخْبَرَهُمْ أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَنْ صَلاَةِ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِنْ خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ
