Sunan an-Nasai 1458 (Book 15, Hadith 26) #16069
Praying Two Rak'ahs When Travelling

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions praying two rak'ahs when travelling, and not offering more than that.

'Eisa bin Hafs bin 'Asim said: "My father told me: 'I was with Ibn Umar on a journey, and he prayed Zuhr and 'Asr with two rak'ahs each, then he went and sat on his carpet. He saw some people offering voluntary prayers and said: What are these people doing? I said: They are offering voluntary prayers. He said: If I had wanted to pray before and after (the obligatory prayer) I would have offered it in full. I accompanied the Messenger of Allah and he did not pray more than two rak'ahs when traveling, and Abu Bakr (did likewise) until he died, as did 'Umar and 'Uthman, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with them all".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prayer while travelling. It was narrated by Eisa bin Hafs bin 'Asim, who said that his father told him that he was with Ibn Umar on a journey, and he prayed Zuhr and 'Asr with two rak'ahs each. He then saw some people offering voluntary prayers and asked what they were doing. His son replied that they were offering voluntary prayers. Ibn Umar then said that if he wanted to pray before or after the obligatory prayer, he would have offered it in full. He also mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not pray more than two rak'ahs when travelling, as did Abu Bakr until his death, as well as Umar and Uthman may Allah be pleased with them all. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our obligations towards Allah even when we are travelling; we should not forget to offer our obligatory prayers in full but should limit ourselves to two rak'ahs for voluntary prayers while on a journey so as not to burden ourselves too much or take away from other important tasks at hand during travel such as taking care of family members or attending business meetings etc..
