The Importance of Two Rak'ahs Prayers

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of offering two rak'ahs for Jumu'ah, Al-Fitr, Al-Adha and when travelling prayers.

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila that 'Umar said: "Jumu'ah prayer is two rak'ahs, and the prayer of Al-Fitr is two rak'ahs, and the prayer of Al-Adha is two rak'ahs, and the prayer when traveling is two rak'ahs, complete and not shortened, on the tongue of Muhammad ".
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ صَلاَةُ الْجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ الْفِطْرِ رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ الأَضْحَى رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ السَّفَرِ رَكْعَتَانِ تَمَامٌ غَيْرُ قَصْرٍ عَلَى لِسَانِ مُحَمَّدٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عُمَرَ

This hadith emphasizes the importance of offering two rak’ahs for four different types of prayers; Jumu’ah prayer, prayer for Eid al Fitr, prayer for Eid al Adha and prayer while travelling. It was narrated by ‘Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila that ‘Umar said that these four types of prayers should be offered with two rak’ahs each without shortening them on the tongue of Muhammad. This hadith teaches us to offer our prayers with full devotion and dedication as it is a way to connect ourselves to Allah Almighty.
