Pre-Islamic Practices During Pilgrimage to Ka'ba

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the practices of the people during the Pre-Islamic period of Ignorance, specifically regarding their pilgrimage to Ka'ba. It also mentions that Allah revealed verses about them in Quran.

Narrated 'Urwa: During the Pre-Islamic period of Ignorance, the people used to perform Tawaf of the Ka'ba naked except the Hums; and the Hums were Quraish and their offspring. The Hums used to give clothes to the men who would perform the Tawaf wearing them; and women (of the Hums) used to give clothes to the women who would perform the Tawaf wearing them. Those to whom the Hums did not give clothes would perform Tawaf round the Ka'ba naked. Most of the people used to go away (disperse) directly from 'Arafat but they (Hums) used to depart after staying at Al-Muzdalifa'.Urwa added, "My father narrated that 'Aisha had said, 'The following verses were revealed about the Hums: Then depart from the place whence all the people depart--(2:199) 'Urwa added, "They (the Hums) used to stay at Al-Muzdalifa and used to depart from there (to Mina) and so they were sent to 'Arafat (by Allah's order)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practices of people during pre Islamic period when they used to perform pilgrimage to Ka’aba. The people used to go around it naked except for a group called ‘Hums’ who were from Quraysh tribe and their offspring. The Hums would give clothes to those who did not have any so they could perform tawaf wearing them. Women from this group would also give clothes for women pilgrims so they could cover themselves while performing tawaf. After performing hajj at ‘Arafat most people used disperse directly but Hums stayed at Al Muzdalifah before departing for Mina and then back again to ‘Arafat as per Allah’s order in Quran 2:199 which was revealed about them. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous and help others even if it is something small like giving away clothes or helping someone with directions or advice on how best one can perform Hajj rituals according to Islamic teachings and traditions.
