Shortening Prayers in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) shortened his prayer but then stood up and prayed two more rak'ahs and prostrated twice.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: The Messenger of Allah prayed Zuhr with two rak'ahs, then said the salam. They said: "Has the prayer been shortened?" So he stood up and prayed two rak'ahs, then he said the salam, then he prostrated twice.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for perfection in prayers
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prayer in Islam. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah initially prayed Zuhr with two rak’ahs, then said the salam. When people asked if he had shortened his prayer, he stood up again and prayed two more rak’ahs before saying salam again and prostrating twice. This shows us that even though it is permissible to shorten prayers when travelling or due to other circumstances, we should still strive to pray as much as possible. We should also be mindful of our actions during prayers so that we do not miss any part of it or make mistakes while praying.
