Respect for Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was teaching Jabir the importance of not interrupting someone who is praying.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "The Messenger of Allah sent me on an errand then I came back to him while he was praying. I greeted him with the salam and he gestured to me. When he finished he called me and said: 'You greeted me with Salam just now and I was praying'. And he was facing toward the east that day".

QUICK LESSONS:

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of respecting prayer and not interrupting someone who is in prayer. It was narrated by Jabir that the Prophet Muhammad sent him on an errand and when he returned he found the Prophet praying. He greeted him with salam but instead of responding to his greeting, the Prophet gestured to him to wait until he finished his prayer. After finishing his prayer, he called Jabir and said “You greeted me with Salam just now and I was praying” showing that even though it was a polite gesture from Jabir to greet him with salam while he was in prayer, it should have been avoided as it could be seen as disrespectful towards Allah’s commandment to pray without interruption or distraction. This hadith teaches us that we should always respect people who are in prayer by not disturbing them or distracting them from their worship of Allah SWT.
