Sunan an-Nasai 1175 (Book 12, Hadith 147) #15783
The Tashahhud Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith teaches us the tashahhud, which is a prayer of peace and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "The Messenger of Allah used to teach us the tashahhud just as he would teach us a surah of the Quran: "Bismillah, wa billahi. A'sal Allahal-jannah wa a'udhu Billahi min an-nar (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. I ask Allah for Paradise and I seek refuge with Allah from the Fire)'.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah teaches us about the tashahhud, which is a prayer of peace and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers. It begins with "Bismillahi wa billahi" which means "In the name of Allah, and with Allah". Then it continues with "At-tayyibatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat", meaning that all compliments, prayers, and pure words are due to Allah. After this comes "As-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu", meaning that peace be upon you O Prophet along with mercy from Allah and His blessings. Then it continues with "As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahi as salihin", meaning that peace be upon us and upon all righteous slaves of Allah. Finally it ends with an affirmation of faith in one God by saying "Ashhadu an la illaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh" meaning I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. This prayer serves as an important reminder for Muslims to always remember their faith in God Almighty while also sending prayers for peace on our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
